PRESS RELEASE:
1972 Andes plane crash survivor Eduardo Strauch and renowned local Latin ensemble Los Bohemios present:
A Celebration of Life, Art and Music! August 8th at Denver's Jazz at Jacks @ 8:30 pm and August 9th at Boulder's Shine @ 8:00 pm.
This extraordinary multi-media event reunites Los Bohemios mountaineer Ricardo Peña with Strauch, survivor of the famous plane crash popularized in the book and movie Alive. Both evenings celebrate the release of Los Bohemios self-titled CD and the North American debut of Strauch's acclaimed abstract paintings and honor their remarkable connection through a unique collaboration of music, art and living history.
"Eduardo's Andes experience is arguably the most famous survival story of the 20th century. Not just because they survived a plane crash, extreme cold, isolation, high altitude, avalanches, and dehydration for 72 days but because they fought starvation by eating the flesh of their dead friends," says Peña. "Eduardo is very candid and open about why they had to do that and how it happened and will be talking about it at this special event."
In December 2005, Peña discovered Strauch's coat and documents while climbing near the impact point of the crash in the remote mountainous border between Chile and Argentina. Funded by National Geographic, Peña lead the only expedition that has succeeded in crossing the Andes by following the historic escape route. Upon completion of the journey, Peña met Strauch and a great friendship flourished between them. They've continued working together and lead a yearly expedition to the crash site.
"One of the great life lessons learned in that incident is that life is not guaranteed. Being alive is an amazing opportunity to have and the best we can do with it is to live it fully and enjoy it as much as possible, thus the inspiration for A Celebration of Life, Art, and Music! and the occasion to remind us of how precious life is," Peña explains.
The Denver and Boulder performances feature a selection of Strauch's paintings including the cover art for the new Los Bohemios CD. Peña and Strauch will share details about the 1972 Andes survival story and the band will perform the brand new CD live, featuring a marvelous collection of Boleros, Cuban Son and Salsa — don't miss these unforgettable evenings!
